I-73/74/75 Route: South Carolina

The South Carolina segment of I-73 is especially significant, providing a direct link to Myrtle Beach and the Grand Strand region — one of the state’s most important economic and tourism hubs. Once complete, I-73 will improve mobility, strengthen hurricane evacuation capacity, and support long-term growth for both local residents and millions of annual visitors.

The corridor would directly serve Dillon, Horry, Marion, and Marlboro counties, connecting inland communities to coastal destinations and creating stronger economic opportunities across northeastern South Carolina.

Route Status

I-73 is included on the State Transportation Improvement Program (STIP) List and has received both state and federal funding. In 2005, I-73 was named a Project of National and Regional Significance by the U.S. Congress. Because the Myrtle Beach area carries great economic importance for the entire state, leaders in nearly every branch of government recognize that investment in this infrastructure is essential.

S.C. Gov. McMaster Calls for Expansion of I-73 in S.C.

On Oct. 4, 2021, S.C. Gov. Henry McMaster, S.C. Dept. of Transportation Sec. Christy Hall, members of the General Assembly, and local Horry County elected officials gathered at the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce to call for the expansion of Interstate 73 in South Carolina. The governor’s proposed $300 million investment would be funded through a combination of South Carolina’s share of American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) dollars and non-recurring dollars from the state’s projected $1 billion budget surplus for the fiscal year 2022.
